The Creeper virus developed for at the beginning of the 70's in the ARPANET and is one of the first computer viruses. The Arpanet developer Bob Thomas experimented with this program, which can move itself within a network from computer to computer. It was written for the well-known operating system at that time Tenex.

This program could penetrate independently over a modem into a network and pass its copy on to a distant system.

The actually harmless, however annoying Creeper experiment spread short hand and uncontrolled in the entire Tenex network of the company. With stricken systems this message appeared on the monitor: "I'M THE CREEPER: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN ".

Shortly thereafter Bob Thomas wrote the Reaper program, this was likewise a virus, however "good-natured". The Reaper spread by the network and looked for the Creeper, as soon as the program became deleted it the Creeper virus. Thus Reaper is the first anti-virus software of the world.

However the Creeper would be nowadays no virus, rather a worm, since this infects no files, but only in the network reproduces itself.
