KEP services (courier, express and parcel services, sometimes also courier, express and postal services) are logistics enterprises, which specialize today no longer only in the small market. The demarcation criteria to other markets are among other things weight and volume of the transmissions, the speed of the goods dispatch and the service.

Partitioning

Courier services

A courier service (also courier or messenger called) promotes the transmission personally and directly from the sender to receiver. The difference to a forwarding business is that couriers operate not line-moderately, transport usually only small transmissions and are aligned to speed. A good example are the bicycle couriers in large cities.

Parcel services

Parcel services are Systemdienstleister, with which by the high standardisation the fast transport of the transmission is guaranteed. The running time of the transmissions is usually somewhat higher by the fixed function than with express delivery services. In addition there is restriction of the transmissions in size and weight, taken over to transport.

Express delivery services

The large express delivery services are just as strongly automated as parcel services, however particularly set in the USA on air freighters. In Europe the terms package and express delivery service mix themselves because of the small distances.

Service offer

The KEP services distinguish themselves by a broad service offer from the Speditionellen offers. These additional services will be able by a higher transport payment recompensed and usually depending upon need by the customer to be additionally ordered.

Package pursuit

The customer can reconstruct still during the transport over Internet or telephone Hotline when its package where is. After feed with the receiver he can see by whom for it was signed or whether the receiver refused the acceptance.

Faster transport

By the choice of faster means of transport (e.g. airplane instead of truck) and/or by courier travels the running times of the transmissions can be shortened strongly.

Preferred feed

Most KEP services offer a feed to the transmission for certain clock times. For example to 8 o'clock to 10 o'clock or to 12Uhr. A feed to 8 o'clock is naturally more complex and thus more expensive than a feed to 12 o'clock.

Transport of critical transmissions

Some KEP services are able danger property, works of art, to transport sensitive devices and cooling transmissions.

Software

Many KEP services offer their customers to software solutions for the dispatch. The software prints a package sticker and conveys the transmission data to the EDP of the KEP Dienstleisters.

Some KEP services offer rudimentary interfaces for existing ERP of software packages like e.g. SAP (XSI = express Shipper interface as part of LE = Logistics Execution) on. The integration expenditure more istaber very highly, because there are no good standards. Large companies feel obligate standards to set to want, why large companies such as UPS, Fedex, DHL and SAP on no format to unite to be able and it remain themselves with good-meant beginnings. Plug and Play is distant light-years.

In small companies the data are seized mostly doubly, because one does not want to afford the high integration expenditure.

Example: SAP - UPS - interface

SAP offers all data at an asynchronous interface on owing to XSI (IDOC). SAP forbids going directly on the data base.

UPS offers the software Worldship to the customers and sets on a ODBC interface. For SAP naturally uselessly. A simple XML interface functions with very many restrictions.

Outsourcing

The large KEP services are to be completed able of parts of the logistics of the customer. (Storekeeping, dispatch, small production work)
