When designated Counterman (cm) in the jargon v.a. the western intelligence services a coworker of a strange service, which became "practice-acquired" the activity for the own service. It does not play a role for the classification as cm whether the work for the strange intelligence service was already terminated at the time of the over advertisement or whether the Counterman is still in the active service of the former client.

Particularly if the activity for both services is received at the same time effected (see double agent), the cm a high personal risk. Beyond that betrayal of official secrets of the original intelligence service can be highly problematic also after completion of the activity for this. Therefore cm work either strictly covered, are particularly protected or with a new identity equipped (like e.g. in the case Werner quiet, which overflowed from the head office clearing-up of the Ministry for public security to the CIA).

The Counterman is therefore a special form of the V-man - he works also covered, with the characteristic that the cm was active for another intelligence service in former times already.
