Cosworth was created 1958 of Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth (1933-2005). The company name consists of the two surnames of the founders.
The Ford Cosworth engine was the most successful Formel-1-Saugmotor (155 victories between 1967 and 1983, related to the DFV).
It was developed due to the new 3-Liter-Regelung from 1966 for Lotus and used for the first time with the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort 1967. It won there directly its first running by the plumb bob US driver Jim Clark.
Costin and Duckworth led the DFV from two engine mounts and cylinder heads of the 1966 for the formula 2 developed FVA engine off, which were installed onto a again developed crankshaft housing, so that a V8-Triebwerk developed (DFV, double Four valve engine, double four-valve engine). This engine was the first 1 engine used in the formula, which fully basic into the chassis was integrated and - as propelling rank with ZF, Hewland or Colotti transmissions combined - which complete rear axle took up. Thus the Lotus 49 was a first representative of this today still current building method.
Soon Cosworth did not only supply the plumb bob US team. Into the early 70ern practically all teams had this "miracle engine" up to Ferrari. For the wedding of the turbo engines starting from beginning/in the middle of the 80's the engine could not bring successes in, why a number of revolutions-limited version for the formula 3000 was derived. The Turbos was forbidden however after 1988. In the formula 1 the HB engine replaced the DFV engine and/or its last stages of development under the 3,5l-Reglement, the DFZ and/or DFR, and won a 11 running between 1989 and 1993.1994 the new engine Cosworth Zetec V8 F1 was introduced. This engine brought Michael Schumacher the first F1-Weltmeistertitel.
In the season 2004 drove the Jaguar, Jordan and the Minardi team with Ford Cosworth TJ2004-Motoren, which correspond the current 3l-V10-Motorenformel. With the door of Ford from the formula 1 for the end of the season 2004 Cosworth was sold to the Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe active in the ChampCar series. For 2006 Cosworth locked a contract with the Williams team, which refers to the development of the 2,4l-V8-Motors. The min pool of broadcasting corporations in oh subsequent team Scuderia Toro Rosso drives 2006 for financial reasons with number of revolutions-reduced 3l-V10-Motoren.
