The Cosatu (Congress OF South African trade union) is the largest South African trade union roof federation.
It resulted in December 1985 from the union of several small trade unions, which had sat down the creation of a not racistic, not sexistischen and democratic South Africa to the goal. Today the rights are represented of more than two million employees in 21 single trade unions by the Cosatu.
The Cosatu was received 1994 a three-party alliance in such a way specified with the African national Congress, the party of the acting president Thabo Mbeki, and the communist party. They set up common lists of candidates with elections and are also otherwise personnel closely interlocked. The alliance was set in the past particularly by strikes due to differences in the economic policy to the burst test. Functionaries of the Cosatu accused thereby to politicians of the ANC to worry in favor of a market-friendly capitalism too little about arms and unemployed persons of the country.
In addition the Cosatu is connected to a large Swazi federation of trade unions with the SFTU.
Present president of the federation is Willy Madisha. As a Secretary-General Zwelinzima Vavi was selected.
