The coast guard in Germany is a coordination group of federal authorities with tasks on lake, like maritime environmental protection, security in the navigation, fishery protection, monitoring of the customs borders and police border control, whereby there are many transferred fields after the sea-task law among themselves. The authorities the involved co-ordinate to the plan of application of the vehicles and steer via the two coastal awake centers into new city (Holstein) (for the Baltic Sea) and in Cuxhaven (for the North Sea) the current employments.

Competencies

Vehicles of following Ministries, authorities and Federal Institutions belong to the coast guard:

Federal police (BPol) (Federal Ministry of the inside)
Wasser-und of offices for navigation (water and navigation administration of the federation (WSV) /Bundesministerium for traffic, building and housing)
Water tariff (federal customs administration/Federal Ministry of finances)
Federal Institution for agriculture and nutrition (BLE) (Federal Ministry for consumer protection, nutrition and agriculture)

The instruction powers are independently of this organization further with the appropriate authorities, i.e. the federal police, the water tariff (Zollkommissariate), the water and offices for navigation and the Federal Institution for agriculture and nutrition.

Vehicles

Numerous ships and boats of the above mentioned institutions become (among other things BPOL: six ships; Tariff: eight Zollboote and four Zollkreuzer; WSV: three high-sea-usual general-purpose ships, BLE: three fishery protection boats and three fishery research ships) assigned.

The vehicles are optically uniform (signature "coast guard", those black-red-golden at the hull and the coat of arms of the coast guard), however differ the basic colours. The basic colour of the vehicles of the federal police is blue, those of the tariff green, those the water and navigation administration black.

Special solution Schleswig-Holstein

Apart from the coordination group coast guard existed an independent coast guard of the country Schleswig-Holsteinals group of water protection police, office for rural areas and national office in Schleswig-Holstein from 1995 to the dissolution at the end of of 2005 for nature and environment. Since the pool of the authority under a common roof on federal level failed because of the resistance of other Lands of the Federal Republic, Schleswig-Holstein decided, to dissolve this group now.
