Since 1919 the international Labour Organization developed a system of international work standards and maintained. These work standards are compiled by the representatives of the members of the IAO (governments, employers and employees) and define fundamental principles and rights in the working sphere. In addition belong conventions, which are legally binding international agreements, which can be ratified by the member countries, and recommendations, which serve as guidelines. In many cases the conventions define basic principles, which are supplemented by the recommendations, whereby there are also independent recommendations.
Conventions and recommendations are adopted to the annual international conference of work of the IAO. If a convention were adopted, the member countries of the IAO are requested in accordance with the condition this "the competent authorities ", normally the parliament to submit for consultation for ratification. If a convention were ratified, it normally comes into force one year after the ratification date. With the ratification the country commits itself to convert and report in regular intervals of the IAO on this conversion the convention in its national legislation and iurisdiction. These reports of the countries over the conversion of the conventions are examined by an expert commission. An appropriate report is published to the international conference of work. During the international conference of work selected cases are discussed.
Beyond that different complaint procedures can be launched against countries, be offended against a convention, which they ratified.
The conventions of the international work organization cover a broad spectrum of topics from the world of the work. The conventions in the course of the time changed. New conventions were adopted, others were updated and also waived others.
