A contingent is one in a while ago assigned quantity, from which parts can be inferred individually. A contingent is exhausted, if the contained residue is zero.
Contingents are also a means of the protectionism (like also tariffs): Imported goods of certain goods are limited thereby to a fixed quantity, in order to protect the own economy.
The development of a process or a system is called contingent, if its future can take different conditions, if these thus not predetermineable, if it is "coincidental" (in the context of the development possibilities).
