Conformity is used with different meanings in different specialist areas. The term designates the agreement of a person or sometimes also a thing with the standards of a context. That can be more socially, contentwise, an ethical etc. a context.

Conformalism designates an attitude, which orients itself in the life execution and in decision making above average strongly at the standards and opinions of the majority of the society and/or the reference's group. The contrast to it is individualism, here aims at the individual comparatively strongly own independent decisions. Individualism is thereby a multilayered term, which designates a thought system, whose contrast is collectivism apart from the meaning contrary to conformalism also (see in addition: Individualism). In addition also the term Nonkonformismus is common as contrast to conformalism. A tendency to the conformalism can on the one hand inside need after a feeling of the affiliation and the longing after integration by assimilation roots, on the other hand in outside conformity pressure of the surrounding society or the reference's group.

Social psychology

Conformity as a term from the social psychology designates an agreeing of an individual with the generally recognized standards and values of its group of references and/or a society as a whole.

From Moede it observed that with individual achievement differences in a school's group the tendency exists to adapt itself. Such, which exhibited alone working very good achievements, dropped in the group, while with pupils with bad individual achievements an improvement in the group was determined.

The 68er-Bewegung protested e.g. against one to its opinion after existing conformalism in the society of the 50's, which had been visible among other things at a uniform strict clothe order, in addition, in opinions standardized by mass media in the Mainstream.

Conformity as topic of the literature

Man of letters such as Robert Musil (the man without characteristics) or Heinrich man (the subject) argued critically with conformity and Opportunismus.

Quality management

In the quality management in the DIN EN ISO 8402 (1995-08, number 2,9) conformity is defined as the fulfilment of fixed demands. This definition applies to quality-referred standards. In the ISO/International Electronical Commission manual 2 "conformity" is differently defined.

For application in the quality management the definition of the term in this form is sufficient. Since however the demands in the standards contain often scope for discretion in the evaluation, is not simple the alignment of the conformity always to determine. This applies in particular, if not individual, more clearly described characteristics, but general contexts from several characteristics, as process cycles are to be evaluated.
