CIM (of English computer Integrated Manufacturing) stands for computer-integrated production. It is a comprehensive term for different other activities, which are supported in an enterprise by the computer.

The components of CIM are:

  • CAD drawing, draft)
  • CAP (computer-aided work planning)
  • CAQ (computer-aided quality assurance)
  • CAM (computer-aided manufacturing)
  • PPS (production planning and - control)
  • BDE (factory data capture)

The technology, which hides itself behind the contractions CAD and CAM, is already for approximately 1965 well-known. One understands by it drawing (computer Aided Drafting) and designs (computer Aided Design), as well as that to it following manufacturing (computer Aided Manufacturing).

In the year 1973 Joseph Harrington presented the concept computers of the Integrated Manufacturing. Thus he wanted to emphasize the meaning of information in production, as well as the synergy potentials with the linkage of the isolated solutions. He spoke of pieces OF puzzles, with it meant he the isolated solutions, like CAD, numerical control, CAM, etc. which in an enterprise alone, without each EDP binding among themselves, was used.

Definition loud CASA/SME

CIM is the integration OF totally manufacturing enterprise by using integrated system and DATA communication coup LED with new managerial philosophies that improve organizational and personnel efficiency. (On German about: CIM the integration of the whole manufacturing company is paired by integrated system and data communication with a new Managmentphilosophie for the improvement of the organizational and personnel efficiency).

Beginning of the 80's was developed that CIM Wheel (CIM wheel) of the CASA/SME ("computer and Automated of system Association" OF the "Society OF Manufacturing Engineers" OF the United States OF America). Main idea was the holistic view of the enterprise, on the basis of the CIM.Im center of the CIM Wheel stands the integrated architecture (integrated system archtecture) with a common database (common DATA) and the information administration and - communication (information resources management & communication).

On the second level enterprise functions became from the ranges factory automation, product & processes and production planning and - control over the components of the integrated architecture links with one another.

At this concept it was new that over it going out administrative tasks, on a third level, were considered. It concerns management & personnel management, marketing, strategic planning and financial system.

The advancement CIM of the Wheel is the Manufacturing Enterprise Wheel. In the center this concept is located the customer.

Definition according to AWF

Definition according to AWF (committee for economic manufacturing, 1985): CIM describes the integrated electronic data processing in all instrument ranges which are connected with production. It covers information-technical cooperating between CAD, CAP, CAM, CAQ and PPS. Here the integration of the technical and organizational functions is to be achieved for product production. This causes the common use of all data of a EDP system, also database mentioned.

The AWF concept be based on the CIM Y model developed by August William Scheer (IDS Scheer and Institut for economical informatics at the university of the Saarland).

Further definitions

At present the CIM enthusiasm had each manufacturer such as DEC, HP, IBM, Siemens its own definition. That one of SIEMENS e.g. called itself. CAI (computer Aided Industry).
