Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) stands for computer-aided manufacturing. CAM refers thereby to the direct control of production plants as well as the supporting transportation and storage systems. CAM is a substantial component of computer-integrated production (computer Integrated Manufacturing, CIM).

Idea

Instead of printing out and to production hand in the computer aided draft (CAD) provided computer data over on classical way in the form of designs and other manufacturing instructions, all manufacturing-relevant information for the direct control of machines and plants is to be prepared.

Components

In the CAM the raw data for manufacturing by individual parts and the assembly are collected by building groups, sorted into work procedures and administered with consideration of dependence.

Additionally to the characteristics already contained in computers supplementing information is in-maintained. In the system aimed directly from the machines to working on codes (CNC) or Materialanforderungen are then made available and called up in each case by the operator. Also within this range interfaces are needed e.g. for press control or a storage system.

After treatment and/or the conclusion of the manufacturing steps the verified results are to be prepared possibly further and be conveyed over further interfaces to other processes in computer-integrated production.

Apart from the respective treatment relating to orders of data archiving and standardizing are a task range of the CAM.
