Chrome by the company S3 Graphics is used as designation for several 3D-Grafikchips and 3D-Techniken. The chrome family is the attempt of a comeback of S3 Graphics in from ATI and nVidia dominated diagram market.

Desktop chip

Delta chrome

At the beginning of of 2003 was already announced with the delta chrome S8 and delta chrome S4 (both AGP 8x) the first attempt of a comeback. The chips were based on long Columbia project in development and are adequate DirectX 9 chips with pixel and Vertexshader version 2.0.

However it lasted in the middle of 2004 to first diagram maps was really available. Due to these long delays was not really successful delta chrome, obtained however because of its good image quality (v. A. of the anisotropic filter) a respect success.

Gamma chrome

Already at the end of of 2004 gave it rumors around the successor delta chrome, which was then introduced at the beginning of of 2005 as gamma chrome. Originally three variants S14, S18 and S19 with again in each case different models, about which however only gamma chrome S18 were planned in different versions on the market came. However it lasted again to center and/or at the end of 2005 to diagram maps on the market came also here.

The gamma chrome with the delta chrome distorted closely however some nose was removed and the interface on PCI express is technical changed.

Chrome S20

In the autumn S3 Graphics communicated 2005 that gamma chrome S19 and S14 were adjusted to favour the new chrome S20 family. On 3 November 2005 the first two representatives came on the market with the chrome S27 and chrome S25.

Also these two chips are based on gamma chrome and/or delta chrome, chrome S27 however with considerable 700 MHz are clocked, to date highest clock rate of a diagram chip.

With multi-chrome two can be at the same time operated or several chrome S27 diagram maps for the increase of the performance.

IGPs

University chrome & university University of pro

Under the name university chrome as Zoetrope (alpha chrome/Savage XP) the developed diagram core was integrated into a multiplicity of chip corroding of VIA Technologies. This IGPs is primarily for office PCs meant and in substantially not for 3D-Spiele suitably.

Technically seen university chrome a DirectX is 7 chip however without hardware T&L unit. The difference between university chrome and university University of pro lies in one improves video engine (Chromotion engine).

Chrome9 HC

In the autumn 2005 VIA K8M890 of the first IGP with the Chrome9 HC diagram core (also admits to delta chrome as IGP) was also introduced. This IGP solution be based on the delta chrome and offers thereby full DirectX 9 support. It is to be counted on the fact that the Chrome9 HC diagram core is integrated into many future VIA IGPs, since the AeroGlass surface of Windows Vista will presuppose a DirectX diagram map.
