CIO is the abbreviation for Chief information Officer (too German about leader for information technology, in former times also EDP leader).

A CIO is in particular responsible Design OF IT-Architecture" (technology selection) and "Delivery OF IT-services" (enterprise) for the management of the three IT-fields "Business and IT-vision" (planning), to ". Furthermore it must specify basic conditions for values and goals of the IT-function in the enterprise and develop a strong relationship between IT and business strategy. Its goal should be, in addition-work on a IT-strategy carried together from the line level.

A generally valid definition of the role profile Chief information Officer does not give it. In the German linguistic area, in particular however in smaller organizations and enterprises one speaks not of the CIO, but rather of the "leaders information technology" or "IT-leader". In corporations, if the CIO on executive committee level is settled, also of the "IT-executive committee".

The CIO has - is it shown in such a way empirically - very strong influence on the degree of the utilization of the IT in the enterprise.
