The first El Caminos was built 1959, two years after Ford the Ranchero. First were built on the basis of a Chevrolet Impala. 1959 sold Chevrolet 22.246 El Caminos, 1960 the sales figures decreased/went back on 14,163 pieces, on which Chevrolet decided to stop production.

Four years later, than Ford still well sold its Ranchero, Chevrolet went to it a El Camino building, on a Chevrolet the Chevelle was based.
1968 became the El Camino longer, because he was based now on station the Wagon. A new High performance super sport SS396 version was now offered. 1969 were replaced the 396 in by the new 402 in (6,6 L) V8.
1970 grew the Topp engine on 454 in (7,4 L), the LS6 version carried out 450 bhp (336 KW) and 500 lbf (678 N m) torque ft. This original El Camino SS454 needed only 13,44 seconds for the quarters of mile.
1973 came the largest El Caminos off the line, owing to which new, lighter construction had one the weight to the predecessor model nevertheless reduced.

1978 came a smaller sharp edged El Camino on the market. The Chevelle was not no more produced, which had as a consequence that one used now the components of the Malibu and the Monte Carlo. For the first time there was also a V6 engine, and from 1982 to 1984 a diesel engine. After 1984 GM shifted production to Mexico, until then production ended 1987.
