The center for European economic research (ZEW) in Mannheim is one of the prominent economiceconomics research institutes of Germany. Its emphasis lies in the micro-economic and research of in particular internationally comparing questions.

It was created on initiative of the federal state government of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the economy of the country and the University of Mannheim in the year 1990 and began its work in the April of the following yearly. It is accommodated together with the MZES in the square L7 nearby the lock.

Under the direction of ZEW president Professor Dr. Dr. h.c mult. Wolfgang Franz succeeded to at the beginning of 2005 the admission into the common federation land promotion ("blue list") as well as the admission into the Leibniz community.

Special attention finds the ZEW index published by the ZEW as early indicator for the economic situation in Germany. He is raised monthly in form of an inquiry among 350 Experts of financial politics and applies apart from ifo the business climate index ifo of the institute as the most important indicator for economic situation expectation in Germany. The ZEW, which finances itself to nearly 45% from third central orders of large enterprises and banks, is considered as rather employer and union near.
