Carl Zeiss (* 11 September 1816 in Weimar, "† 3 December 1888 in Jena) was a mechanic and entrepreneur. It created the well-known company Carl Zeiss Jena (today only Carl Zeiss). The correct way of writing of the surname read at that time Zeiss.

Carl Zeiss already visited lessons at the Grossherzhoglichen trade school during its Gymnasialzeit. From 1834 to 1838 Carl Zeiss goes as a mechanic apprentice into the teachings with the university University of Dr. Friedrich grains. After it its four years old teachings terminated and it had received its leaving certificate of the university, it, as at that time usual, went on journey. It was from 1838-1845 in Stuttgart, Vienna, Berlin and Darmstadt. Carl Zeiss completes 1845 then a study in chemistry and mathematics in Jena.

1846 it created an fine-mechanical-optical workshop in Jena. End of 1847 the first microscopes in the workshop were manufactured.

1848 married Carl Zeiss the minister daughter Bertha Schatter, which bore 1850 the son Roderich Zeiss and died.

In the year 1852 Zeiss employed already 10 coworkers in his workshop, who manufactured mainly microscopes.

Carl Zeiss married 1853 a second time (again a minister daughter). With Ottilie Trinkler it had one son (Karl Otto) and two daughters (Hedwig and Sidonie) in the marriage still another.

Starting from 1857 Zeiss manufactured the first compound microscopes. For its achievements Carl Zeiss was appointed on 27 October 1860 the . 1866 became that 1000. Microscope manufactured.

Since Carl Zeiss recognized that a further improvement of the microscopes produced by it could take place only on basis of solid computations, it co-operated starting from 1866 over many years with Ernst Abbe. Despite initial setbacks Carl Zeiss never lost thereby the patience and put thereby the basis for the later ascent of its company to the prominent producer for microscopes and other fine-mechanical-optical devices.

Until 1875 the number of persons employed rose to approximately 60 coworkers. Now Ernst Abbe occurred as a limited partner the company. Also Roderich Zeiss occurred one year later likewise the business and relieved thereby its father noticeably.

1880 receive Carl Zeiss to the University of Jena. It had reached a very high Bekanntheitsgrad by the high quality of the microscopes. The manufacturing 10.000. Microscope 1886 became short after its 70. Birthday with a celebration celebrated.

Starting from March 1888 also photographic objectives were manufactured with Zeiss. In the September of the same yearly the staff increased to 327 coworkers.

After several cure stays and painful weeks Carl Zeiss died on 3 December 1888. He was buried at the old person cemetery (Johannisfriedhof) at the philosopher way in Jena.

The work Zeiss' can be visited in the optical museum in Jena.

After it the Carl Zeiss high school was designated.
