Carl Leverkus (* 5 November 1804 in Wermelskirchen; "† 4 February 1889) was a successful chemistry entrepreneur and name giver of the city Leverkusen.

It began 1822 pharmacist teachings and studied then in Marburg. To a work as a pharmacist assistant in Trier it went to Paris, worked there in a pharmacy and studied in the evening chemistry to the Sorbonne. 1829 put it put down into Berlin the pharmacist exam. In pouring it made its doctor for 1830.

In Wermelskirchen it opened for production artificial Ultramarinblaus to 1834 the first factory. Later it began with the transfer of its factory on the bald mountain at pointing village. In memory of the family seat in Lennep it called the again developing settlement "Leverkusen". The factory became a model company with the newest mechanisms of the technology and a large economic success.

But not only as successful entrepreneurs made itself Dr. Carl Leverkus a name; its wife and he were for their "social vein" do admit and worried intensively about the interests of the staff, created her own work choir and her own freiwillige Werkfeuerwehr, built dwellings and a consumer association shop for the workers.

1884 it became secret Kommerzienrat and honour citizen of Wermelskirchen.

After his death its sons 1891 sold his factory in pointing village to the Elberfelder "Farbenfabriken pre-mount Friedr. Bavarian & Co AG". Thus Carl Leverkus' factory was the foundation-stone the today's Bavarian AG in Leverkusen.

It was married and had eleven children. It lies in Wermelskirchen buried. 1930 he became posthum name giver of the city Leverkusen.
