The supermarket chain Cactus is one of the most important exempt private companies of Luxembourg. It operates, among other things under the marks "Cactus ", "super Cactus "and "Cactus ", supermarkets, hypermarkets and business of the food retail trade.

The Cactus group employs 3,880 coworkers (conditions: 1. January 2005, source: STATEC) and is thereby after Arcelor Luxembourg second largest private employer.

History

1900 created Joseph Leesch a grocer's shop, which he removed 1905 together with Michel Donven to a wholesale for colonial goods. 1928 ended co-operation and Leesch created a new society under the name "to Leesch "together with his three sons Arthur, Jacques et Aloyse. 1930 it created a on the Rue de Strasbourg in Luxembourg (city).

1955 took over the sons Arthur Leeschs, Paul and Alfred, the third generation of the family, the business. 1962 opened it on the Rue de Strasbourg the first self-service shop under the name "to VIVO "(international sales organization combined). 1966 followed a coffee business.

The first supermarket under the name Cactus was opened 1967 in Bereldange, second one year later in Brill quarters in Esch (Alzette). 1972 followed a second supermarket in Esch (Alzette).

1974 opened the enterprise its first Shopping Mall, "the Shopping center bark to Etoile "in praying rank. Further supermarkets in different cities of Luxembourg followed. 1979 opened the first delicatessen store of the enterprise under the name "to "in Luxembourg (city).

1989 were opened the shopping centre Cactus Howald with the first Free flow restaurant. In the same year the enterprise moved into a again built firm center in wind yard.

1994 and 1995 were opened the first building markets under the name "to Cactus Hobbi "in Howald, Diekirch and Esch.

2001 withdrew itself Paul Leesch from the business. Its son, max of Leesch took over the presidency of the again created board of directors. General manager is Laurent Schonckert.
