The Bodenkunde (also Pedologie v. gr. pedon = soil or Edaphologie v. gr. edaphos = ground) the science, itself with the emergence, is the development, the components, which characteristics and the classification of soils concerns.
As founders of the Bodenkunde the Russian Wassili Wassiljewitsch Dokutschajew can be called.
The Bodenkunde is an interdisciplinary research direction, which and methods of different specialist areas uses realizations. For this the fundamental natural sciences physics and chemistry, life sciences Botanik, count Zoologie and microbiology, the geosciences geology, mineralogy, geography, Hydrogeologie and hydrology, as well as the agrarian sciences crop farming, plant nutrition and agricultural engineering. In the course also geo computer science an increasing role plays modern evaluation and of method of analysis.
The realizations of the Bodenkunde are in the ecology, the agriculture and the forestry of fundamental importance. The latters are concerned with the culture soil, which forms the foundation of human surviving since the beginnings of the agriculture in the Jungsteinzeit.
On basis of the traditional soil classification in the forest science a view of the soil developed as ecological system. The prognoses over the effects anthropogen conditioned element entries on the bioelement household from soils by long-term investigations were confirmed.
The Bodenkunde supplies - in the context of the material sciences - also soil-mechanical, earthstatic and hydraulicmetric bases for the Geotechnik and structural design, as they are needed in the foundation engineering.
Lasting retaining of the functionality soil to secure or re-establish it above all through "good technical practice ", is among other things in the federal soil law for the protection (BBodSchG) embodied. If necessary to be reorganized for this harmful soil changes are negative functionality if possible to be avoided or continuously. Among the negative changes beside the mechanical soil compaction also chemical impurities are ranked by refuse dumps and thereby caused water pollutions. A too strong anthropogene demand leads to these degradations, increasingly by soil erosion (see also Dust Bowl), sealing or leaving soil fertility to be measured to be able. With effects on the soil impairments of its natural functions as well as its role are to be avoided as archives of nature and culture history as far as possible.
