Biomass marks the whole of the mass at organic material in a defined ecological system, which was biochemical synthesized. It contains thus the mass of all organisms, the died organisms (Detritus) and the organic Stoffwechselprodukte. About 60 per cent of the biomass of the earth is represented by micro organisms.

Biologists and geologists define biomass as part of the highest earth's crust and the atmosphere, which are inhabited by living organisms and/or be inhabited can. (Biosphere)

The total mass of carbon in living organisms is indicated as 280 109 tons. According to newer estimations the annual total production of the biomass on earth at organic carbon on 173 109 tons becomes estimated. 118 109, to the marine range 55 109 tons are allotted to the mainland range ().

Biomass is determined as Frischgewicht or dry weight per cubic meter of volumes or square meters of surface.

Origin

Primary producers (plants) are by photosynthesis in a the position to develop out for the power production not usable materials (CO2, H2O, mineral materials) under energy input biomass (particularly in the form of coal hydrates). The primary producers as food used of consumers for the production of animal biomass.

Meaning for humans

The solar power biochemical stored in the biomass can be used also as a renewing energy supplier (regenerating source of energy) for the production of electricity or as fuel (regenerativ energy). The use from biomass to the production of warmth, electricity or as fuel makes a balanced CO2-Bilanz possible, since only the quantity of CO2 is discharged, which were biochemical bound before. However similar pollutants develop as with fossil sources of energy with the burn of biomass (e.g. Nitrogen oxides, sulfur connections, aromatics, soot particles). In particular still more soot and fine dust than with develop brown coal with the burn of wood.

In developing countries biomass is in the form of wood, plant wastes and dung the most important source of energy. Biomass can be used also as liquid fuel, so in Brazil, where one makes alcohol, which is used as fuel of Zuckerrohr. In the Chinese province animal dung serves itself SCN for the production of fermentation gas. Different research projects have the goal further of advancing the power production from biomass. The economic competition to the oil led however so far to the fact that such projects yet beyond an early development stage.
