Beer garden one calls restaurants and/or the part of a restaurant, whose regaling in the free one takes place. The origin of these mechanisms (in the classical sense) is to be found in Bavaria. Here there in the meantime between beer gardens generally and traditional beer gardens one differentiates.
The traditional designation in Franconias is beer cellar. In Austria a beer garden also guest garden is called. In Switzerland the term garden economy is common.
One sits on a beer set.
Beer gardens originated in in Bavaria in 19. Century in Munich, when predominantly bottom-fermented beer was drunk. This could be manufactured only in the cold months, then an appropriate decree of king Ludwig I. read, since the fermentation had to take place at temperatures between four and eight degrees. So that also in the summer this beer could be poured out, larger Bierbrauer in the river slopes of the Isar put on beer cellars, in which one was able, the brewed beer to keep accordingly well cool. In order to lower the average temperature of the camp further, Kastanien were planted, those with their close sheet work in the summer good shade offered and strewn on the soil of the slope gravel. Generally is accepted that the people a large measure jug along-brought, in order to take the bought beer with home. In the hot summer months the beer became however often already directly locally verzehrt.
For this an excerpt from the reason for Bavarian beer garden regulation in the newest version from 20 April 1999:
The next logical step took place soon and apart from the pure storage the beer cellars soon also for the bar was used, by placing simple banks and tables under the trees. This led to it that these places became soon a popular trip goal of the residents of Munich, much to the annoyance of the smaller Bierbrauer remained in Munich. In order to work against the increasing drift of guests, these came closer at Ludwig I, to which ordered that the beer cellars lying about around Munich operate further the bar, there however no meals were allowed to serve. Everyone, which wanted to eat there, had to bring along the bread time now necessary for it.
This order is no longer valid in the meantime, so that it is possible to buy e.g. at appropriate conditions something to the meal or somewhat to be served be able, however permits it further many beer gardens that the guests bring along their own food (Bavarian also called bread time). These are designated to the better distinction than traditional beer garden.
The sociological meaning of the Bavarian and/or beer gardens for the society cannot do at all highly enough is estimated.
Within this "protected" range know itself all social classes ungezwungen to meet, all nationalities, native ones as well as tourists, older and younger humans. In the traditional beer gardens also today still own food, only the beverages may be bring along must to the be acquired - thus a participation in this social life is possible also for less wealthy groups of societies. Communication and pleasures are the probably substantial elements beer garden attendance (apart from the benefit of the hop beverage naturally). Playgrounds for children help that the entire family can be uncomplicatedly in the beer garden. Riot and stress do not become as good from as all visitors estimated, therefore these develop also only in rare exceptional cases (and if necessary very fast by order forces are terminated). For gastronomische mechanisms that it is natural for most visitors, also completely unknown table neighbours are probably singular "zuzuprosten" and with these to converse often also intensively. Thus actual class-exceeding communication, those develops in the long run also for the elemtaren peaceful Zusammensein of most inhomogenous groups of people is useful (it is surveyed often that Munich was always a city of the immigrants - far over half of the today's population are non--residents of Munich and non--Bavaria).
The fact that these effects are not unintentional shows this passage from the this very day valid Bavarian beer garden regulation:
Among the oldest beer gardens the Kugler Alm with Oberhaching and the wood culture ranks with Pullach, which stress both for itself the invention of the Radlers. From the wood culture the beer garden revolution in such a way specified proceeded in the year 1995.
The largest traditional beer garden of the world is the resident of Munich deer garden. The beer garden at the same time most well-known with residents of Munich and tourists second largest and is in English garden because of the Chinese tower.
The most central beer garden of the city is in the middle in the Viktualienmarkt.
