Planning is the mental anticipation and organization of future structures, processes and events. The business planning designates the procedure of planning in business concerns. It is one of the most important tasks of the management and/or the management systems.

Planning horizon

One differentiates regarding the planning horizon between strategic, operational and tactical planning:

• Strategic planning specifies the fundamental goals of an enterprise within a time horizon of more than 5 years.
• Operational planning describes the concrete operational goals for the reaching of the strategic goals within a time horizon of 2 to 5 years. Concrete resources are selected and specified measures.
• Tactical planning regards quantitatively the worth-drawing processes up to a time horizon of 1 year.

Ranges of the business planning

The value of the different planning areas differs depending upon industry, economic layer, age of the enterprise and other factors of influence. The following ranges are components of business planning. They develop hierarchically on the merchandising scheme, which forms the basis for further planning particularly in producing enterprises.

  • Materials requirements planning (to the fulfilment of the production plan)
• Personnel planning
• Procurement planning
• Financial plan
  • (short term financial plan)
  • Capital requirement planning (long-term financial plan)
• Investment budgeting
