The forerunner of the BfArM was Institut for medicament, which was created on 1 July 1975 as part of the Federal Health Office dissolved in the meantime. With the government removal from Bonn to Berlin in Berlin/Bonn law it was specified that the seat of the authority is shifted as compensation measure for the federal city Bonn from Berlin to Bonn. In March 2001 the removal was locked. On 1 July 2005 a comprehensive restructuring process of the medicament permission range was locked. Planned renaming of the BfArM in DAMA (German medicament agency) was first shifted due to the expected elections to the Bundestag in September 2005.
