Bulb fish are inadvertent in the technical language of the Schriftsetzer and printers in the text in a wrong character font, set appearing letters. The term is used in this meaning exclusively in the Plural. The Singular usually designates the magazine bulb fish.
The term originates from the time of the lead composition. The error crept, if letters were back-sorted into the wrong setting boxes. Common was also the term of the fished setting box, if numerous indications were wrongly sorted.
Also with the desktop publishing there are bulb fish. Reason for it are here for example character fonts, which do not contain special characters such as umlauts. These must be set then in another character font.
