In the years 1948 to 1963 in the down-Austrian Langau and from 1962 to 1963 in the neighbouring Riegersburg brown coal was diminished.

Discovery

First excavation attempt

Post-war period

After the Second World War Austria was cut off because of foreign exchange shortage of urgently necessary coal imported goods. Coal promoted inland was not allowed to leave longer time the respective zones of occupation, what particularly met Vienna and Lower Austria hard and endangered the reconstruction generally.

The severe winter 1946/1947 intensified this crisis additionally. Thereupon decided the Federal Ministries for fortune safety device and economic planning as well as trade and reconstruction to promote coal production.

For the purpose the mining industry society for advancement with limited liability based with the task to care for and promote in the context of the mining industry promotion law of 1947 coal mines enterprises to Austria to increase in addition, by own enterprises production. On 17 June 1948 with the actual mining industry enterprise in "the pit Austria was begun ". Up to the year end wurden145.200 m overburden removes, in order to open the coal seam. In November and December of the same yearly only with human muscle power already 1353 tons of coal were diminished. Zirka 15 men promoted 10 - 20 tons of coal with staples and shovel daily. After the coal had been dug also still by filters, it was transported with horse carts to the station by Langau.

The delivery record was obtained with 255.044 tons of annual production in the year 1956.

Despite mechanical handling capacities of up to 1.200 tons daily during the winter months coal production sank starting from 1957. On 31 July 1963 the enterprise was stopped in Langau.
