By Bossieren one understands rough working on of stones or in other connection also manufacturing gypsum or Wachsfiguren. It is an old handicraft art and became in 19. Century at different universities (e.g. University of Hanover or technical University of Chemnitz) in a scholarly manner.
Addition from Meyers encyclopedia: Bossieren (, bosseln, v. also bosselieren franz. bosse, "embossments, roundish increase"), the art, to possibly give to a soft material by working on with simple tools an expedient or artistic form. It is mainly used, in order to represent models for the sculpture, ceramic(s) and for the metal casting, or also, in order to form articles (Bosse, Rondebosse), which can be used directly even as ornament or too anderm one Behuf. For the B. one uses Bossierwachs, mixture of wax with turpentine, tallow, tree oil etc., or Thon with an additive of Glycerin, any colored. Round (in all directions freely standing) articles are formed either completely from wax, or they receive a core from wood; to half raised work one lays the wax on a flat board or a andre document and works on it with wooden, iron or beinernen styluses (Bossiergriffeln, i.e. to on, which are at their ends spitzig, approximately, curved or in any way arranged. The B. in Thon happens in the same way. The articles of the Bossierens stand during the work on the swivelling Bossierstuhl, so that the artist, without leaving its place, who can turn mass which can be worked on in all directions.
