The city Bochum [] is the center of the middle Ruhr district in the Land of the Federal Republic North Rhine-Westphalia.

The circle-free city in the governmental district Arnsberg is one of the four upper centers of the Ruhr district and is with approximately 396,000 inhabitants the sixth-largest city of the country and under the 20 largest cities of the Federal Republic of Germany. Bochum is member in the landscape federation Westphalia lip and in the regional association Ruhr. The number of inhabitants of the city exceeded 1905 the 100.000-Grenze and made Bochum the large city.

In Bochum six universities, under it the Ruhr University, are also over 30.000 studying one of the largest universities of Germany. Bochum lies on the flathilly "Bochumer land back "between the rivers Ruhr and Em at the border between southern and northern Ruhr coal zone. The highest point in the city lies in the Kemnader road and measures 196 m NN, the lowest point is because of the Blumenkamp in Hordel and measures 43 m NN.
