BLOW was a short-lived literature magazine of the Vortizisten. They appeared only in two expenditures, first in June 1914 and second in July 1915. A third expenditure was announced for autumn 1915, appeared however because of the war no more.

Organization

BLOW by Wyndham Lewis one gave change, which wrote also many contributions. Important authors were Ezra Pound, Rebecca west and Ford Madox Ford. The booklet appeared generally speaking Folio format. Diagonally over the title page pulled itself the signature BLOW. The Typografie of the booklet was expressed experimental, several fat, serifless, grossfomatige type faces was used. In this organization the booklet resembled the publications of the Futuristen and Dadaisten. The numerous illustrations came among other things from Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier Brzeska.

The first booklet

The first expenditure introduced of the communist manifestos of the Vortizisten, which wrote Lewis and Pound. The first communist manifesto consists of a list of things, which condemns either or verflucht (English "curse" and "blow") or (English "bless") become however praised. To condemned the things among other things England (because of the climate, many water therefore around etc.) belongs, to France (because of its its Sensationalismus' etc.), the British to it specialist, good craftsmen, amateurs, journalist, humor, sport and much other more. To the praised things England (because of the ships, the navigation, its ports etc.) belongs, the (they for little money nut/mother nature stop order there), English humor (because of Swift and Shakespeare etc.), France (because of its Pornografie etc.) and much other more.

In the second communist manifesto some principles are formulated, i.e.:

  • 1. Our requests are beyond from action and reaction.
  • 2. We go out from conflicting statements about a selected world. Design a brutal structure of juvenile clarity, which stands between two extremes.
  • 3. We fight on both sides.
  • 4. We fight only on the one, then on the other side, always however for the SAME thing, which is neither the one side, still the other one, still ours.
  • 5. Mercenaries were always the best soldiers.
  • 6. We are primitive mercenaries of the modern world.
  • 7. Our thing is the thing of NONE.
  • 8. We rush humor on humor. Stimulate a civil war under peaceful apes.
  • 9. We want humor then only if it fought like a tragedy.
  • 10. We want tragedy then only if them can hold themselves the sides like hands over the belly folded and a laughter out centrifuges can like bomb.

The second booklet

In the second number were above all essays and editorials of Wyndham Lewis, in addition some the first poems of T.S. Eliot, Gedichte von Pound and a narration of Ford Madox Ford. The First World War, in which some the artists involved died, made an end for the booklet. In Wyndham Lewis' words: "Europe was completely in the war, and a larger explosion (in the Origial: "BLOW") as my to me the wind so quite from the sails had taken."
