Bitter field is the district town of the district bitter field in the southeast of the country Saxonia-Anhalt and a center of the chemical industry.
Bitter field is appropriate for about 25 km northeast of resounds (Saale) and about 35 km north of Leipzig. East the hollow artificial lake is, southeast Goitz and in the north follows the neighbour city Wolfen. The city lies in the nature area of bitter fields mining district.
Adjacent municipalities are Friedersdorf, Greppin, Holzweissig, circular block, Pouch and Sandersdorf.
Bitter field will fuse to 1 July 2007 with the neighbour city Wolfen and the municipalities Greppin, Holzweissig and Thalheim to a new city Bitterfeld Wolfen also together about 50,000 inhabitants, which will be then the fourth largest city of Saxonia-Anhalt.
Before the Second World War bitter field was a modern industrial centre, in times of the late GDR became it a symbol for the marode equipment of the economy and dangerous environmental pollution.
