The Bibliotheksreferendariat is in Germany the two-year official-legal period of instruction for the higher library service. It locks with a career examination, which the entrance to the service at scientific or at public libraries granted (in some cases also combines).

Condition for application is in principle a successfully locked, at least universit¤res higher education of any field. The libraries write the places out usually however depending upon need for the graduates of specific fields. The Referendariat is divided into practical training at a library and theoretical training. This is completed either as postgraduales remote study with fixed operational readiness level times at Institut for library science of the Humboldt university parallel to Berlin during the entire 24-monatigen Referendariatszeit to the practical training, or follows the first, excluding practical 12-monatigen training part continuing in the library that likewise theoretical training part 12 months at the Bavarian library school in Munich.

At present (2006) the federation and the countries train Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hessen, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein library junior lawyers. Some countries (Saxonia-Anhalt, Bremen, Hamburg) stopped the training. They fall back just like Brandenburg, Saxonia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania if necessary to the graduates of other Lands of the Federal Republic and the federation.

In Thuringia the training in the form of a Volontariates, which structurally similarly as a Referendariat runs off, takes place but is organized under private law and with a career examination does not lock. North Rhine-Westphalia delivered the training completely to the professional school Cologne, i.e. practical courses at libraries complete the training, however apart from a practical course remuneration are not paid in the context of a structure study ("master OF LIBRARY and information Science "). The study conclusion of the FH Cologne is legally not recognized outside of North-Rhine/Westphalia as career examination, why an attitude is there normally not possible into the official relationship. There the Cologne course of studies - although "masters" - however not only once to the summer semester 2007 a new inscription corresponds to the current regulations for konsekutive courses of studies in accordance with so-called Bologna process will be possible. It will probably give a follow-up offer, is not well-known to details however yet. For the time the graduation of the last graduates in the summer 2008, planned by the summer semester 2007 up to, study fees will besides presumably be raised. This leads to paradoxes the situation that one in North-Rhine/Westphalia then for bibliothekarische training with rather unclear future prospects pay must, while the junior lawyers of the other Lands of the Federal Republic receive the usual candidate purchases.
