The Bewag, now Vattenfall Europe Berlin, is the electrical utility for Berlin.

History

To 8. May 1884 was created the Bewag as urban works (A.G.StEW) of the German Edison society. Already on 12 August the AGStEW occurred the Konzessionsvertrag of the city Berlin and took over thereby the task of the current supply for Berlin. With the center in the Mark count road 44 (gendarme market) the first public power station of Germany developed.

On 1 October 1887 the AEG took over the administration of the A.G.StEW, which were called since then citizens of Berlin of works (BEW). On 1 October 1915 then municipal authorities of Berlin took over the BEW plants and large parts of the coworkers and designated the enterprise of urban power stations Berlin (StEW). The BEW and its participation remained. The BEW became getting thing and firmierte since then as bank of electrical values. Finally the again created operating company under private law citizen of Berlin took over urban power stations act on 24 November 1923. - Total one (BEWAG) the enterprise of the plants of the StEW of the city Berlin in the context of a lease. The city remained owner of the plants.

On 1 January 1934 the citizens of Berlin force and light corporation (BKL) became and the BEWAG fuses. The fortune of the BEWAG turned into thereby on the BKL. After the Veschmelzung was called the enterprise citizen of Berlin strength and light (Bewag) - corporation.

In the year 1948 the Soviet Zentralkommandantur the members of the board Wissell and Dr. Strassmann asked its activity in the east sector of the city. Professor Witte, likewise member of the board, withdrew and as the kommisarischen director/conductor of the Ostberliner of enterprises was appointed. Thus the BEWAG lost control for the firm parts in the East part of the city and thus on 40 per cent of its customers. The business premises were shifted into the shell house in the western part of the city. She was exclusive legal successor, although in the East part of the city its own power supply firm with same name was created and registered in the there trade register.

Until 1993 the Bewag operated electricity mains of the former West Berlin as island net according to UCTE criteria, for which the building of numerous power stations was necessary in the city. In the former power station Steglitz operated the Bewag AG an accumulator buffer for the bypass of load peaks.

The Bewag belonged to the Swedish Vattenfall company and was renamed on 1 January 2006 in Vattenfall Europe Berlin.

Lines

The transmission network of the Bewag is mostly verkabelt. Two of the few three-phase alternating current overhead lines run from the transformer station Reuter and/or combined heat and power station Reuter up to the urban motorway (operating voltage 380 kV and 110 kV). From the urban motorway to the 380-kV-Umspannwerk center leads the oldest 380-kV-Drehstromkabel in Germany (1977 shift).
