The British Broadcasting corporation (BBC []) is a British broadcasting corporation, which operates several radio and television programs.

History

The BBC was created on 18 October 1922 of John Reith, Cecil Lewis, Arthur Burrows and Stanton Jefferies in London as independent Radiosender. The first radiant emittance of a program took place on 24 November 1922 from a Londoner Studio, some days later also from Birmingham and Manchester was sent. Reiths vision was a transmitter, which should apart from education and information also maintenance offer and of the government and of advertisement be independent should.

  • 1925 could be expanded that supply area by start-up of a long wave transmitter in Daventry since nearly the entire island.
  • 1927 became the British Broadcasting company, after it the Royal charter (similar the German broadcast state contract; order for program, structure and financing of the institute regulates) given, in British Broadcasting corporation was renamed. John Reith was raised 1940 into the nobility.
  • 1932 started the BBC the first regular short wave transmissions. Today World sends service to the BBC in 43 languages over short wave and satellite.
  • The first Fernsehausstrahlung of the BBC took place on 2 November 1936.

The BBC is financed almost exclusively by broadcast fees, similarly as public broadcasting corporations in the German-speaking countries.

For approximately 2000 the BBC changes its programs over to over cables, satellite and antenna receiptable digital formats (DVB, DAB and DVB-T). This conversion makes the introduction of a number of new transmitters (BBC Three, BBC Four, CBeebies, CBBC and BBC Prime) possible. Starting from 2009 is to be radiated exclusively digitally.

By the affair around the death of the bio weapon expert David Kelly in July 2003 the BBC reporting came under pressure. The commission of inquiry to the suicide of Kelly had a BBC contribution, which stated the fact that the government secret service information about weapon of mass destruction in the Iraq before the war was to have aufgebauscht when untenable criticizes. The BBC examined important facts and did not admit this error later. Kelly should have supplied the information for this report. After the publication of the results in January 2004 in the hat clay/tone report, the BBC apologized several times with prime minister Tony Blair. The BBC general manager at that time Greg Dyke took over thereupon the responsibility and withdrew.

In the autumn 2004 the BBC begins to make their archives available of the public. For the time being about 2000 to a large extent scientific video tie-clips are published. The archives material can be used for an unlimited period, only the commercial use is forbidden.

The BBC applies in the modern medium age despite its role of the pioneer in the introduction of modern technologies (for example videotex, Internet, digital radiant emittance) with its centralistic and bureaucratic structures as well as an oversized administrative machinery as ponderous and expensive. In view of this reform and slim need of the BBC BBC general manager Mark Thompson announced in December 2004 that to 2007 2,900 places by altogether over 27.000 places, 2,500 was painted of it in the administration. Furthermore it announced savings of 320 million Pound per year, which above all the program organization are to benefit. About 1,800 coworkers are to move into a new radio house after Manchester.

At the beginning of March 2005 decided the British government, the Royal charter, at the end of of 2006 runs out, in order to extend ten years. The principle of the fee financing is to remain existing thereby for the time being. In addition management and the supervisory board of the BBC are to be reformed. So far that supervised BBC board OF Governors the institute. In its place starting from January 2007 BBC Trust will step.

Background for the status of the BBC

The BBC was also strongly of the colonies British on the information supply and the Commonwealth states aligned at the beginning of. Starting from 1932 the Empire at that time service supplied these areas. The later foreign service BBC World service earned itself in addition, Reputation by the independent information supply of world-wide theaters of war or crisis.

This is a fundamental difference to the German foreign program, the German wave, which listeners German apart from the message supply abroad in particular to the task has to represent Germany. Among them first of all culture reports and the of the German language count.

Special meaning attained the German program of the BBC, which from the world-well-known Bush House would send in London, in the world war years between 1939 and 1945. Dangerous hearing of BBC London was in Germany usually the only possibility, in order to arrive at secured information about the war situation and the front situation. Whereupon high punishments stood. Thus for example the young person Helmuth was condemned by the people's court because of hearing from enemy transmitters to death. It had printed and in Hamburg had distributed the radio endings with copies on handbills. The deep bell tones, the registration number at that time of BBC London, became the legend. The German program of the BBC was stopped after over sixty years from cost reasons at the beginning of the 2000er.

In postwar Germany the BBC was model for the structure of a broadcast system independent of the state. An abuse of the media by the state as in the NS time should be prevented thereby. After the model of the BBC the NWDR in the British zone, which had with Hugh Greene at the beginning of also a British director, developed.

A large emphasis of the BBC is the education. The number of education transmissions for all age stages to see those on the television or on DVD to acquire video home system is, seems nearly difficult-to-understand. The level and the requirement are usually high. Meanwhile are some the BBC reports also synchronized on the German television, for example on the private station VOX under the designation BBC exclusive to see. The good reputation abroad is to be attributed beside the points specified above also to the qualitatively very good programs.

The BBC sells world-wide its television broadcasts (in particular documentations, television films, Comedyserien) and licensed internally developed innovative maintenance formats.

Inland has the BBC, the world-wide largest be entitled-financed and public broadcasting corporation, still not a media power which can be underestimated. Still the BBC occupies the principal part of the transmitter frequencies despite the introduction of a binary broadcast system. Compared with Germany only relatively few private broadcast and television programs (in particular Channel 4 [is however publicly nevertheless purely advertising-financed], ITV, Five and the paying television station BSkyB) are licensed.

Receipt

Despite attitude of the coding in the year 2003 the receipt of most BBC transmitters (up to BBC parliament) turns out problematic to impossible. A cause is the radiation over Astra 2D to 28,2 degrees of east, which is very strongly focused on the British islands.

East the connecting line Hamburg Augsburg therefore uncommon 100 cm antennas are necessary, the necessary size continue to rise toward the east and reached in Berlin and Dresden 150 cm. Receipt in the west of Germany, in the Benelux countries, in Switzerland, in France and in the north of Spain is to a large extent unproblematic. See also: http://www.beitinger.de/sat/astra_2d.html (contains also left for the allocation of Astra 2).

In the Netherlands BBC One and BBC Two over cables is receiptable. BBC World service is e.g. sent world-wide in important cities like Berlin on UKW.

Radiant emittance formats:

  • Radio TO (LW/MW/KW):
    • bad quality with usual receiver. For example BBC World service on MW 648 kHz or radio Five live one on 693 and 909 kHz. On long wave: 198 kHz (BBC radio 4).
  • Radio DRM Testsendungen (digital radio Mondiale) on MW 1296 kHz
    • good clay/tone quality, the transmissions take place above all in the evening
  • Radio of FM (UKW):
    • for long distance reception unsuitable
  • Radio DAB (digital radio):
    • for long distance reception unsuitable
  • Radio DVB-T
    • for long distance reception unsuitable
  • Television similarly terrestrial (PAL/AM SSB)
    • for long distance reception unsuitable
  • Television digitally terrestrial (DVB-T)
    • for long distance reception unsuitable
  • Television digitally satellite (DVB-S)
    • via Astra 2D
  • Internet: The BBC web page offers an extensive information offer also over 2 million pages. Many programs and seperate shipments are callable over Streaming procedures and audio on of and services.

One notes further for similar television that the receipt standard something from the PAL B/G used in Germany deviates. Great Britain uses PAL-I (other clay/tone carrier distance) and for the stereophonic sound NICAM.
