Basilius Besler also Basil Besler (* 13 February 1561 in Nuremberg; "† 13. March 1629 ebenda) was a German pharmacist, Botaniker and a publisher.
Besler operated the pharmacy "to the Marienbild" in Nuremberg and had its own botanischen garden as well as a material assets cabinet.
1597 assigned it the bishop von Johann Conrad of Gemmingen the plant of a botanischen garden on the area of the Willibaldsburg. On an area with a size of approximately a hectare it put on the garden on eight terraces. It availed itself thereby of the support of the Botaniker Joachim Camerarius, Ludwig young man as well as Carolus Clusius, which had already put on the residence garden in Vienna. The garden in became soon famous in far circles.
The plants in the garden became starting point for the famous "Hortus Eystettensis" (Nuremberg appeared 1613) in and, a plant book of the baroque, whose publication Besler was assigned. In the book on 367 copper passes on 850 sides altogether 1,084 plants are treated. Since Besler was not Botaniker, he had won as a co-author Ludwig young man. Its work ranks among the large preciousnesses of the botanischen literature.
