Sir Basil Zaharoff (born as Vasileios Zacharias) (* supposed 6 October 1849 in Mugla, Turkey; "† 27 November 1936 in Monaco) was a Greek weapon dealer and before his death owner of the gaming house Monte Carlo.

Life

It applied at its time as richest and most powerful weapon dealers of Europe. Zaharoff supplied each state with weapons, which brought in the name "salesman of death" for him. It is to have been involved in armament makers Vickers, Krupp and Skoda. From fear of assassination attempts busy it several doubles. It permitted photos before its Tod.Obwohl Zaharoff also Germany with weapons supplied only briefly, it by king George V. to the knight was struck.

Zaharoff buildup in a slum area Konstantinopels and was originally leader of a gang of road children. It organized a fire-brigade for the poorer quarters, which were financed over extortions (is called the fire-brigade put fires), and left those soon thousands of road children, who stood under its control, dog excrement in the lanes to collect, which was sold at US fertilizer companies. Sir Basil Zaharoff donated 1920 a half billion gold franc to the Greek state for the implementation of the Megali Idea (of new Greece history 1820-1948, Hans's resounding man, 1949 H. Bouvier u CO. Publishing house Bonn, P. 132)
