Bartholomew Robert (* 1682; "† 10 February 1722) was a notorious Pirat.

Life

This from of Wales coming man already about 20 years had to sea driven, when he was taken prisoner 1718 of the Piraten Howell Davis with the assault on Anamaboe, a fishing village lying before the coast of Guinea, and pressed in Davis' crew. Already six weeks later the Piraten on the island of the there governor lured into an ambush, whereby Davis was killed, the remaining crew fled on lake outside. Robert in this short time already so much reputation had provided at the crew that they selected it promptly to the leader.

At that time those began nearly three years lasting unparalleled career of the black Bartholomew. As the first it went back after Principe and made from revenge the island equal the ground. After the Kaperung two ships were it and its crew of the coast of Guinea and set sail direction Brazil.

Before the coast of Bahia they discovered the most with difficulty loading ship dreist in the middle a fleet of 42 Portuguese trading vessels, escorted by two warships, drove into these inside and enterten, in order to make itself immediately thereafter from the dust. In June 1720 it drove 22 there trade ships lying before anchors as well as four further out with its ship, the Royal Rover, into the port of Trepassey in and in all peace completely. The best one of these prizes, an English Galeere, became its new flagship Royal Fortune, which he exchanged however soon again for a ship of same name.

It kaperte before Newfoundland and new England still another number of French as well as English ships, before it made itself on the way into the Karibik. Up to the spring nearly completely brought it and its crew the merchant shipping between pc. Christopher and Martinique to 1721 to succumbing, afterwards it segelte again over the Atlantic to Sierra Leone.

At the end of August kaperte the Robert's frigate Onslow and made it the flagship of its fleet consisting of three ships (Royal Fortune, Great Ranger, Little Ranger); it was the last Royal Fortune.

After the plundering of 11 slave ships, which lay in Whydah before anchors, he saw the instruction on 5 February 1722 in, as he believed, large trade ship and gave the Great Ranger under Captain James Skyrme for pursuit. The alleged booty however was the HMS Swallow under Captain Chaloner Ogle, a warship with 60 cannons on board. After an illusory retreat, which had the sense to bring the two ships except range of vision of the remaining Piratenflotte the Swallow turned suddenly, fired a devastating broadside on the Great Ranger and enterte these.

On 10 February 1722 the warship met the Royal Fortune and Ogle gave the instruction for firing. Robert, standing on a carriage, by one the throat was slit, whereupon the remaining crew surrendered.

Bartholomew Robert had during its this way and that over the Atlantic running travels the tremendous number of over 400 ships gekapert and might thereby one the largest of all times have been.
