The banana principle is an ironical expression, which expresses hope, the still unreife (speak unsatisfactory) product ripe with the consumer. Basis is the fact that bananas become green delivered and only after a ripe time with the middleman or enjoyable with the final consumer unreif harvested.

The term in quality control is positively designated; generally it has however a negative meaning.

The expression is used with priority in industries, which with motor vehicles, computer construction units or software to act.

Such a software is called therefore of the users also banana commodity. Without error tracing in alpha tests or beta tests the programs are sold equal to the final consumers. The manufacturers point out gladly that it is impossible to possibly test all final user configurations and thus arising errors. The recovery by updates after problem descriptions is more economical therefore not only, but also the only realistic possibility. The procedure is called of the manufacturers therefore also "user adjustment ".

Thus the analogy applies also here: Banana commodity matures only at the customer. The users often cannot use however the software already paid or only reduced. They must wait after the complaint with the manufacturer for the update and pay for it sometimes even still specially.

Whether this strategy is durably successful, depends on the requirements of customers.
