Avro was a British airplane manufacturer with master seat in Manchester. The name goes back on the firm founder, the airplane pioneer Sir Edwin Alliott Verdon Roe.

The beginnings

After Roe had already made itself a name as a technical designer, he developed the first English power plane, the Roe in the year 1908 I. it was propelled a wooden double-decker, from 24 a HP engine and a pusher propeller. Whereupon several Dreideckerkonstruktionen followed like the Avro tri tarpaulin.

On 27 April 1909 A.V. Roe as well as its brother Humphrey Vth Roe the company A.V. Roe and company created.

Different advancements of Roes constructions followed, and with the Avro type D, whose first flight took place on 1 April 1911, Roe turned away from the three-cover he concept and dedicated themselves now again to the double-decker. A copy type of the D was equipped even by way of trial with floats, and thus this design is considered as the first British water airplane.

An increased interest in the development of water airplanes led in the autumn 1912 to the fact that A.V. Roe shifted a production enterprise after Shoreham, where a suitable water surface stood for testing these machines for order.

In January 1913 the company in A.V. Roe & Company Ltd. became renamed, and the abbreviation Avro as trade name was introduced.

Beside different models, the partial only in very small numbers of items were manufactured - sometimes by series a prototype was only produced - manufactured the company also models, which were extremely successful and in demand and partly up to the today's day than legendarily apply. Not least chief designer Roy Chadwick was responsible for many successful drafts of the company Avro.

Thus Avro in the 1 manufactured. World war the Avro 504, an airplane, which were used less in the fight, but many pilots as training machine served. The machine had its first flight on 5 July 1913, in high numbers of items during a long period was produced (still until 1932 the 504 for the export one built) and set thereby particularly in England of accents within the range of the Freizeitfliegerei.

The risen interest in aviation was recognized with Avro, and so one created the Avro transport company, whose was it to accomplish entertainment flights (so mentioned "Joy riding") after the First World War. Particularly in the seaside resorts these flights of large popularity enjoyed of the English south coast.

A second support leg created itself Avro after the end of war within the range of the automobile industry. Thus the enterprise worked as supplier for the model T of the Ford works in meeting Ford park, and also own automobile developments with different engine variants were brought starting from 1919 on the market. A Unikum was the "Monocar", quasi a disguised motorcycle, which was built to end of the 1920er-Jahre. Probably Roe inspired to the building of this vehicle by the fact that its enterprise had made the building of the Runabouts of the company Harper in the years before. The Harper Runabout was a small, vehicle with a 270-ccm-Einzylinder-Motor von Villers and served as economical car as alternative to the motorcycle for the broad mass of the population.

The "golden twenties"

Into the 1920er-Jahren many Avros participated to the most diverse airplane running and competitions, in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the aircraft manufacturers from Manchester and Hamble with London.

Were above all machines from the Avro Avian row, which made speeches due to some record flights of itself, so for example with the Langstreckenflug of the Avro chief pilot Herbert "Bert" Hinkler in February 1928 from England to Australia.

In this time one worked at Avro also on the development of the Autogiros; some machines of Cierva were built under license.

Starting from the year 1935 Avro belonged to the Hawker Siddeley group.

The 2. World war

In 2. World war developed Avro from the twin-engine Manchester the Lancaster, the most successful night bomber of the Royal air Force, to which a war-crucial role is after-said.

The post-war period

In July 1945 the Hawker Siddeley Group transferred the Canadian company Victory aircraft made of mark clay/tone, Ontario and created there the Avro aircraft Ltd., from which the Avro Canada developed later. The Avro Canada developed among other things the Avro Canada C-102 '' jet liners '', the Avro Canada CF-100 '' Canuck '' and the Avro Canada CF-105 '' Arrow ''.

With the Avro Vulcan the last Avro military aircraft was produced. The company name Avro disappeared due to the reorganization of the Hawker Siddeley group in the year 1963.
