The US-American entertainment electronics company Atari was created on 27 June 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney and is considered as technological germ cell and outrider of many developments of the communication industry in the today's time. At the beginning of to center of the 1980er years rose the now also internationally operating company Atari Corp. to the largest developer and manufacturer of video games for play hall automat, home video game systems (e.g. Atari VCS 2600) and - computer (Atari 400/800/XL/XE) up. To the economic collapse of the video game industry in the year 1984 and to the change of the firm guidance Atari successfully shifted the emphasis of the products by introduction of the ST-Computerbaureihe on the home user range. Errors in the public work and wrong decisions for the adjustment of the product range let the conversion and the profits break in starting from beginning of the 1990er years drastically; 1996 was dissolved the last still remaining departments. The label name Atari changed into the year 2001 to the French company Infogrames. 2005 made itself Atari with the play console Atari Flashback attentive.

History

The early years

1972 created Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney in California (the USA) the company Atari. The term "Atari" was taken thereby to the vocabulary of the Go-play; later the Logo in form of the representative Japanese mountain Fuji was added. The company name Syzygy originally planned by Bushnell was already otherwise assigned.

Inspires from the large computer play liked in student circles was! developed Bushnell and Dabney at the beginning of the 1970er years an automat play named computer Wars, whereby this project due to the pedantic control no commercial success had granted. The economical break-through succeeded finally with an Pong automat and the home version in form of portable equipment connectable at the television. This Pong console marks the beginning of the commercial video game era.

1975 worked Steve job and Steve Wozniak, the later joint founders of Apple computer, short time for Atari. Under its leadership among other things an improved Pong Heimkonsole (with a minimum of transistors) and the video game Breakout developed. Starting from 1976 the Atari developers worked on the completion of the revolutionary video game system with the code name Stella (later than Atari VCS 2600 markets). The lack of own capital funds for the covering of development costs resulted in the sales of Atari at Warner Communications in October 1976 for 28 million US Dollar.

Warner Communications and Atari

1978 left Nolan Bushnell Atari. In the next two years numerous studies were made to home computers and different video game consoles and appropriate prototypes up to production-ready ones were partly brought. 1979 started production and the sales of the first Atari home computers as well as the Atari VCS 2600 video game console, which developed soon to best sellers. In this time developed besides the first play hall automats with random scan terminal (lunar Lander, 1979) and with Battlezone (1980) a completely new play category: the so-called roofridge person Shooter.

separated 1980 due to diversities of opinion with the management the programmers David Crane, Larry Kaplan, Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead Atari, in order to base on 25 April 1980 Activision. Soon thereafter (1981) also the chief developer of the home computer department Jay Miner Atari turned the back and created the company Amiga, in order to pursue own ambitionierte projects, their implementation it under Ataris leadership seemed impossible.

A stock exchange scandal in December 1982 Raymond Kassar forced to give up on 7 July 1983 the management. Under the line of its successor James Morgan co-operation with Jay Miner and its company Amiga was strengthened, up to the common conception of the so-called Lorraine project, one on Motorola 68000-CPU was based home computer system.

The Tramiel era

To outstanding business successes in the video game market it came soon to the first serious crisis - 1983 made for Atari an operational loss of 536 million US Dollar. Thereupon Warner Communications sought to repel loss-pregnant firm sections Ataris and found on 2 July 1984 in briefly before the Jack Tramiel a buyer for the kriselnde home computer section, dismissed with Commodore. The play hall automat department remained with Warner Communications, now however under the name Atari Games Corp. (existent until 2003).

Under Jack Tramiels auspice by Shiraz Shivji, the "father" of the Commodore 64, the Atari ST in a record time of only five months developed and already on the CES in January 1985 in read Vegas in form of the Atari 130ST and 520ST of the public presented. In April already took place the distribution of the first 520ST computer, a model, which became in the next years the best seller and which enjoyed within the range of the professional music production of large popularity in particular. Until 1993 were extended the pallet by some ST-models.

The end

In November 1993 Atari with the video game console Jaguar started a further product offensive in the video game segment. The sales numbers stayed however far behind expectations and development costs and consumed last reserves. On 30 July 1996 the JTS corporation, a manufacturer of non removable disks, probably as publicity campaign, took over all shares of Atari and rang thereby the end of the video game manufacturer Atari.

The rights at Atari turned into on 22 February 1998 from in the meantime insolvent JTS corporation for five million US Dollar at Hasbro Interactive. Finally took over 2001 the French computer game manufacturer Infogrames of Hasbro the trademark laws and firmiert since the second quarter 2003 even under the name Atari.
