Enterprise history

From the establishment to the Second World War

The enterprise history of Aston Martin begins 1914. The founders Lionel Martin (1878-1945) and Robert Bamford Bamford & Martin had Ltd. in January 1913 under the name. to the Callow Street in the west of London a small trade with vehicles of the mark Singer begun. With this cars the two participated also in different running, and they had soon the desire, improved and run-more suited vehicles on the wheels to place. After Lionel Martin on a Singer with moderate success had participated in the mountain running of Aston Hill, the idea for the name developed: Aston Martin.

The young company found a new domicile at the Henniker Place in west Kensington. In March 1915 the first Aston Martin became certified, a prototype, which received the pointed name "Coal Scuttle "(coal box). A second prototype developed only for at the end of of 1920 at briefly before the referred location in the Kensingtoner Abingdon Road. Robert Bamford had left the company at this time straight, since he had little interest in the planned quantity production of automobiles. Its place took in the meantime the American millionaire son count Louis Vorow Zborowski (1895-1924), which made also so some financial syringe available for the enterprise. As a running driver Zborowski earned the first Rennmeriten in May 1922 for Aston Martin, when he broke ten world records in the oval of Brooklands with a cut of 122 km/h. But in October 1924 the count came with the large price of Italy into Monza around the life and Lionel Martin slipped ever more into a financial inclination. Also new backers could not stop the administration of the bankrupt's estate in the year 1925 no more. Martin left its enterprise and died only 20 years later with a traffic accident in the Gloucester Road in Kingston.

Lord Charnwood had seized and took over already several times Aston Martin financially under the arms now the regiment. Together with Domenico Augustus Cesare Bertelli and William Somerville Renwick he began in October 1926 at a new firm location to the Victoria Road in Feltenham, Middlesex, with the Aston Martin of engine Ltd. to build new models. Bertelli and Renwick brought into the company developed 1,5-Liter-Motor with four cylinders in. Lord Charnwood contributed at least a good name. On this basis successively Aston Martins under the type designations developed "for international ", "Le Mans ", "Marks of II "and "Ulster "starting from 1927. From now on Aston Martin Rennfahrzeuge collected points of victory with all well-known motorraces, from the tourist Trophy over the Mille Miglia up to the 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans and Spa.

The Aston Martin of engine Ltd. end of 1932 found a new owner, Sir Arthur Sutherland, who entrusted its son Gordon with the management. At the end of of 1935 had the 1,5-Liter-Motor retired and one began with the development of a 2-Liter-Maschine. In addition one decided to build itself starting from 1936 also "zivilere "vehicles. On basis of the new model 15/98 open four seaters, Drophead and Saloons developed. The image transfer of the racing course onto the road succeeded so exemplary that already in May 1935 in the The count clay/tone hotel to London Tottenham Court Road a small fan municipality for the mark club of the world united to first automobiles: The Aston Martin Owners club (AMOC) counts today world-wide scarcely 5,000 members.

From racing Aston Martin withdrew itself now and left to private drivers the field. 1936 separated Bertelli, which one called internally "Our Bertie ", from the company. It had pushed the early running era of Aston Martin considerably its stamp open. Aston Martin made itself in the 20's and 30's-years on the racing courses of the world a good name and despite financial bottlenecks had survived. But now the last chapter before the war was broken open.

With the development "atom "wanted to bring trend-setting technology to Aston Martin with modern streamline Design on the road. But when the prototype developed in the spring 1939, Gordon Sutherland with its technical designer Claude Hill had no more time to develop the vehicle to production stage. From 1941 to 1946 on "the atom "any longer one did not continue working. Since the establishment of an enterprise to 1945 only approximately 700 vehicles of the mark Aston Martin were built. On average a new "Aston developed "since 1919 only every two weeks.
