By army postal service one understands the post office supply of the units in the employment in military affairs by particularly trained soldier by the designation army postal service civil servant.

During the German war 1866 e.g. each day more than 30,000 letters were carried of and after the army by the Prussian army postal service. The experiences gained in this war led to a reorganization of the army postal service mechanisms: except army post offices for each army corps and the army postal service expeditions (offices) for the divisions now also special stage post office managements were furnished, that had to manufacture and after the changing needs adapt Postverbindungen for the moving armies.

The French-German war 1870/71 was then to a certain extent a case of test for the new army postal service, which had been prepared and converted by general post office master Heinrich of Stephan. The north German army postal service consisted during this war of 77 institutes for army postal service with 292 officials, 202 juniors, 294 Postillionen, 869 horses and 188 vehicles. With the six collecting points at the French border the Postsachen flowed out of Germany before their forwarding to the troop units together. Since during the war to an area of over 170.000 km extended the operations, 411 institutes for army postal service were necessary, in order to carry more than 90 million letters, 2.5 million newspapers and 2 million packages.

The current in each case service order of the army postal service belonged to the mobilization and was therefore at that time kept secret.
