William Averell Harriman (* 15 November 1891 in New York, NY, the USA; "† 26 July 1986) was an US-American politician of the democratic party), businessman and diplomat.

Averell Harriman was the son of the Eisenbahnmoguls Edward Henry Harriman and Mary Williamson Averell, brother of E. Roland Harriman. It was first married with Kitty Lanier Lawrence, which deceased in the year 1936. Later he married again, Marie Norton Whitney, which had left its married man Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, around Harriman to conjugal. Its third and last wedding was with Pamela the Beryl Digby, the former wife of Winston Churchill's son, Randolph, and the Broadway producer Leland Hayward.

Political career

Harriman was a successful student of the Yale university, and also together with Prescott Bush in the Skull & Bones society was appointed there. Harriman worked under President Franklin Roosevelt as a special envoy to Europe, and participated with the meeting between Winston Churchill and the US president in Placentia Bay in August 1941. The exit of this five days lasting meeting became admits as the Atlantic charter, a common explanation of the principles of the USA and Great Britain. It was 1943 and 1946 for the U.S.A. Ambassadors in the USSR and 1946 Ambassadors in Great Britain. US president Harry Truman appointed it the Minister of Trade, in order to take the place of the Trumankritikers abroad Henry A. Wallace.

In running on the governor posts against the republican Thomas Dewey in New York 1954 it fought Deweys promoter Irving M. Ives. It was one term of office governor, until the republican Nelson Rockefeller brought it to 1958 to case.

Harriman was nominated in the years 1952 and 1956 as was subject however to H.S. Truman and Adlai Ewing Stevenson II.

In the Kennedy administration he was appointed the Ambassador RK Large, a position, which he held until November 1961. Later he was selected to the assisting undersecretary of state for Far East conditions. By April 1963 it remained on this post, until he became an under-secretary of State for political affairs. It continued to lead this office under the Lyndon John on administration until March 1965, until it was appointed the Ambassador RK Large again and this office over the remaining legislative period of Johnsons dressed. Its attitude in the Viet Nam war is very disputed, because it rejected the peace negotiations of Paris. It was also member of the Council on Foreign relation.

Harriman received the Presidential Medal OF Freedom (liberty medal) to 1969.

Business career

The fortune of its father helped it to create the bank W.A. Harriman & CO in the year 1922. When its brother E joined. Roland Harriman 1927 of the company, the company name in Brown Brothers Harriman & CO became. changed. 1931 fused it with Brown Bros. & CO. around the very successful Brown Brothers Harriman & CO. to create. Well-known coworkers are George Herbert Walker, and Prescott Bush, which were employees of E.R. Harriman in the same way, thus with the union Banking corporation (UBC), which was closed 1943 by the US Government, because it made business with the enemy (Germany).
