The article Austrian energy industry describes the status within the ranges power production, energy trade, energy consumption and energy reserves.
The current supply in Austria can be covered to a large part by water power - both run power stations at the rivers and pump-fed power stations in the alps -, but becomes the dependence on energy imported goods - above all natural gas and oil - with a view of the entire energy consumption of Austria (thus inclusive traffic, heating of buildings, etc.) clearly.
In the last years also increased on renewable energies such as wind force for generation of current, biological gas facilities and wood shred is set for heating, so that in isolated areas of the supplying degrees already over the Kyotoziel lies, but altogether the CO2-Ausstoss over of 1990 lies clearly, although it should have been lowered.
Likewise a small - however extremely relevant - role still plays the own natural gas and oil promotion in Austria. Since in the last years several large Erdgasvorkommen are discovered, and to be partly already also opened could, since the year 2000 even natural gas is exported, which in Austrian history is first. Already a larger role played the oil. After the connection of Austria at Germany 1938 the oil visiting became immediately and - promotion intensifies, whereby the oil promotion assumed in the years of the Second World War in Austria since that time extent been no longer there. Also in the crew time after the war by the allied great powers domestic oil became the Politikum, since the Soviet Union wanted to integrate majority in their zone oil deposits present also for the time after the crew of the Soviet economy.
In the energy trade Austria in Europe an important role comes as transit country, since a large part of the natural gas imported goods of Western Europe from Russia Austria cross.
In the oil and nature gas industry (natural gas, oil gas) two enterprises are active in Austria. The OMV and RISE UP as well as a further enterprise of this industry employed also conditions 2004 912 persons. The oil promotion amounted to in this year 981.6 millions t, after 1.015 millions t in the previous year, and is easily in sinking included. Still 1970 was promoted approximately 2.75 millions t oil. The natural gas extraction however increases since a low 1986 annually, since since that time regularly new deposits of natural gas, usually in Lower Austria and in the mol ASS ASS, are discovered, and also after and are opened. The promotion amounted to 2004 1,489 millions t (approximately 2 billion m
91% of the oil promotion 2003 came from the OMV, which remaining 9% of RISE UP.
The power production in Austria built itself 2003 up as follows:
Between 40 and 50% of the domestic generation of current can be covered from run power stations, further approximately 20% from storage power stations (entirely 59 TWh annually). Approximately 8% of it contribute Kleinstwasserkraftwerke. The largest hydro-electric power plant operator is the group. At present exist 552 run power stations, which are largest of it, which contribute approximately 75% to the generation of current by run power stations, at the Danube and to the Drau. 102 storage power stations dominate the generation of current in the high-alpine area in central and west Austria, and contribute due to the larger production fluctuations also substantially to the domestic current exports. Stone and brown coal power stations produce further 12% of the domestic current consumption, fuel oil contribute 2%. Natural gas contributes approximately 15 to 20% depending upon fluctuations in the current production of the run power stations to the domestic generation of current. Other biogenous sources of energy contributed 2003 scarcely more than 1% to the generation of current.
The thermal power stations (main gas) are used for the cover of the maximum performance. Due to the atomic check law there are no nuclear power stations in Austria.
Approximately two thirds of the recognized in Austria are wind power stations, further approx. 15% are biomass in firm and liquid form.
Force heat coupling plants (KWK) make waste heat usable with the burn of sources of energy as long-distance heating. The generation of current is only minimum reduced here, whereby the efficiency rises altogether. 52% of these plants are in gas-fired power stations, 15% in plants for the burn of oil, plants for the burn of biogenous fuels constituted 21% of long-distance heating production, and for 6% inflammable wastes are responsible. Brown and hard coal power stations contribute 6% to long-distance heating production. Long-distance heating from KWK able plants comes to a per cent also from the burn from industrie and city wastes, like e.g. from the plant of the disposal enterprises Simmering those the main purification plant Vienna is attached.
The long-distance heating pipeline net was 2003 approximately 3,430 km long and is further developed. 16.6% of all households in Austria, approximately or 549,000, were supplied 2003 with long-distance heating.
