Aureus (majority Aurei) is 8.19 g a heavy Roman gold coin, which had a very high value at expenditure times. It existed already since Sulla, since Julius was frequently minted. Since Augustus the Aurei weighed in fact 1/42 of the Roman Pound (approx. 327 g). The Aurei was reduced later in the weight and finally 309 (western realm half) and/or 324 (eastern realm half) from emperor Konstantin I. by the Solidus (target weight 4.54 g) replaces.
