Aulus Cornelius Celsus (* around 25 v. Chr. ; "† around 50) were a Roman and one of the most important medicine writers of the 1. Century n. Chr. It is disputed whether Celsus was active as a physician or is considered only as a theoretician. Over Celsus' life is little well-known.

Works

Its large work Artes covered the areas agriculture, military affairs, Rhetorik, philosophy, legal doctrine and medicine (as only receive).

Celsus relied with its realizations mainly on the ideas of the Greek physician Hippokrates. Celsus stands in the tradition of the alexandrinischen school, therefore he is called also medicorum Cicero. It was first, that numerous medical expressions from the Greek one in latin translated.

The medical part of the encyclopedia covers eight books:

  • Book 1 gives a history to the medicine,
  • Book 2 treats the general pathology,
  • Book 3 the individual diseases,

Meaning in the Middle Ages

Celsus' work was the first classical medical paper, which, after its Wiederentdeckung 1426, was printed. Celsus applied beside Galen as one of the most important sources to medical realizations in the Middle Ages. Only with Paracelsus (over 1500), translated standing over Celsus (Paracelsus called itself in such a way, because he rejected some theories of the Celsus and preferred a experimentale medicine), the theories of the juice teachings and the bleeding of the Celsus and the Galen were regarded increasingly for outdated.
