August Quirinus Rivinus, eigentl. Brook man, (* 9 December 1652 in Leipzig, "† 20 December 1723 ebenda) was a German physician and Botaniker.
His father Andreas brook man (1601-1656) was professor for philosophy and medicine in Leipzig. It was well-known also as again-Latin poets, its names had latinisiert and called themselves Rivinus.
August Quirinus Rivinus studied medicine at the University of Leipzig (among other things with Michael (1644-1732), Gottfried Welsch (1618-1690), and Johannes Bohn (1640-1718). 1670 it became Bachelor of philosophy, 1671 Magister artium. Far studied it in Helmstedt was attained a doctorate where it 1676 to the Dr. med. Afterwards Rivinus worked as a practical physician in Leipzig. He was at the same time starting from 1677 private lecturer, starting from 1688 member of the medical faculty. Starting from 1691 he was a professor for physiology and Botanik, 1701 professor for pathology and 1791 professor for therapy at the University of Leipzig.
Rivinus set up a plant system, with which the bloom crown applies as differentiating characteristic. It followed in the rest of the morphologic and terminological principles of the philosopher and Botanikers Joachim Jungius and spread thoughts of a binary nomenclature. With the fact it demanded that the generic name had to be called with each kind and the specific kind name has to follow it as adjective. However it did not adhere in its work to plant systematics to this demand.
Rivinus published a number of medical, botanischer and astronomical work. A compilation of its works was published under the title "Dissertatione medicae diversis temporibus habitae, nunc vero into unum fasciculum collectae" 1710 in Leipzig.
As consequence of its observations to the sunspots it was blind the last ten years of its life.
Rivinus was member of the Royal Society.
A plant is designated in honours Rivinus, it is the Viola riviniana Reichenb., the Hain violet or Rivin' s violet.
