August Oetker (* 6 January 1862 in upper churches; "† 10 January 1918 in Bielefeld) invented baking powder in working condition.

1891 acquired Dr. August Oetker the Aschoff pharmacy in Bielefeld and developed a baking rubbing means, which should ensure a success of the pastry. Starting from 1893 Oetker filled up its baking powder, to which he gave the name "Backin", and put thereby the foundation-stone for the Oetker group, which manufactures it this very day in unchanged prescription. Due to its skillful marketing its product found to rapid paragraph, and from its pharmacy a successful enterprise became fast: 1900 built the first factory for Oetker and sold already to 1906 50 million package Backin.

Before Oetker Justus of Liebig and its American pupil evenly had already invented Horsford a baking powder. Contrary to Horsford, to which in the USA baking the powder bakers recommended, Oetkers Vermarktungstrategie addressed itself primarily to housewives.

Its grandchild Rudolf August Oetker took over later the enterprise.
