August Howaldt, actually August Ferdinand Howaldt (* 23 October 1809 in Braunschweig (pc. Andreas); "† 4 August 1883 in Kiel) was north Germans an engineer, a technical designer and an inventor, who introduced the industrialization of the city Kiel as an entrepreneur considerably.

Life

Born as a son of the Braunschweiger of Goldschmieds David Ferdinand Howaldt, from which he received also his first vocational briefing, he let 1837 Kieler citizens train in Hamburg as the "practical Mechanicus" and became with marriage of its wife Emma Diederichsen. To 1.10.1838 it created together with the wealthy Kieler buyer Johann Schweffel the mechanical engineering institute Schweffel & Howaldt. This manufactured first machines for the agriculture in the Danish Schleswig-Holstein, 1849 however the first screw ship machine for the first screw gunboat of the world, "of the Tann". The mechanical engineering institute built the first iron diver screw ship (submarine) after the plans of William farmer, the fire diver, who is today in the military-historical museum of the German Federal Armed Forces in Dresden. In the years 1860 and 1864 still two tractors with the names Kiel and Schwentine were built.

On 31 December 1879 took over its three sons George, Bernhard and Hermann Howaldt the factory and continued it in company Howaldt.

August Ferdinand died to 4.8.1883 in Kiel, it left 5 children.

1889 became the mechanical engineering institute justified by it and by George a Howaldt 1876 on the bank of the Kieler created threw by establishment of the Howaldtswerke AG - which today's HDW - combines.
