An attribute certificate is the connection between characteristics (attributes) and a certificate, marked electronically by a trustworthy place.

Production and purpose

An attribute certificate can be produced by each trustworthy certification body, especially this does not have to be identical to the certification body of the certificate of the user.

The attribute certificate contains a reference to the certificate and one or more characteristics, which can be picked out trustworthily. In this way characteristics can be assigned trustworthily, without having to change the original certificate to a certificate in connection with completely different applications and in different environments.

Application

Attribute certificates distinguish typically characteristics, which characterize either the certificate or the person more near:

• to marking the role (n), which may accept the person in a system
• to marking a vocational or technical qualification of the person and by it connected authorizations
• to marking a restriction of use of the certificate, for example "transaction to maximally 100.00 euro"
