The association of trade of the German book trade is a registered association (registered association) with seat in Frankfurt/Main.

Based in the year 1948 as working group of German publisher and bookseller federations in the western zones of occupation, since the 1825 created association of trade of the German booksellers lay in Leipzig in the Soviet zone of occupation. Later than association of trade of German publisher and bookseller federations designation, in the year 1955 the German book trade renamed, on 1 January 1991 the older Leipziger association of trade of the German booksellers was attached.

The association dedicates itself today to the lobbying and the promotion of the publishing house and book trade economy as well as the culture.

Structure

The association of trade of the German book trade consists of the Federal association with seat in Frankfurt/Main as well as eleven regional organizations. Its three subsidiary companies are the exhibition and fair company ltd. (book fair, the marketing and publishing house service of the book trade GmbH and the book trade service company ltd.

The membership is book trade enterprises, publishing houses, publishing house representatives and similar industrynear bodies reserved. The number of the members is with 6.570 (conditions: 1. January 2003). To its members the association of trade assigns the so-called reference number.

Cultural and political activities

The association of trade organized annually the Frankfurt book fair as book fair most meaning world-wide as well as the Leipziger book fair and lends the peace price of the German book trade. Besides the German book price and the Leipziger book price are lent for the European communication.

On political side the association of trade represents an offensive policy within the range of copyright, regarding the value added tax (books are value added tax-privileged in Germany), the book application of fixed prices and the middle class promotion.

Since a Relaunch in the time of the daily Newsletters still more on magazine trimmed is the stock exchange sheet for the German book trade, only once per week federation sheet. Like the association of trade between book trade, publishing house and intermediate book trade stands and for its sometimes opposite interests as common Public relation.

Memberships

The association of trade is member in the international publisher union (IVU), the international bookseller combination (IBF), the European association of publishers (FEE) and the European Bookseller Federation (EBF).

Line

Chief of the association of trade of the German book trade is starting from 2006 Dr. Gottfried Honnefelder, publisher of the DuMont literature and art of publishing house, Cologne. His predecessor Dieter Schormann (60), since autumn of 2005 leading employees of the Thalia bookshop in pouring, withdrew. (Deputy chief: Ole Schultheis).

Full-time managing director of the association of trade of the German book trade: for November 2005 Alexander Skipis (51), lawyer, experience Ministerialdirigent hessian state chancellery as managing directors, in PR and politics, last. Predecessor Dr. Harald Heker went into the executive committee of the society for musical performance and mechanical rights of reproduction (GEMA).

Alexander Skipis over its first months in the office: The new German book price and the reading out competition, in which annually 700,000 pupils participate, as well as a co-operation with the city Frankfurt are to still erstarken. A federation reform of the delegate meeting to install it alternatively as an industry parliament in such a way specified (general meeting in the sense of the federation reform with more rights in federation decisions), was shifted (29 present ones with 44 seats) for repeated modification for the delegate meeting on the autumn 2006 to discharge at the earliest on the general meeting 2007. View on the book market 2006

How the association of trade prognosticates, well a quarter of the booksellers expects a good sales development. 60 per cent as in the past year: in accordance with media control GRP international for the association of trade raised with Belletristik easy plus of 1,3 per cent, on high level consolidates. I.e.: Detective stories (plus 4,5 per cent), fremdsprachige literature (plus 55,1 per cent) - in the last year also 30 per cent of more titles of this group of titles on the market than still 2004. The child and youth book had very strong growth rates. Over half of the booksellers there not only "Harry Potter" made a better conversion than 2004 - over the entire year a turnover increase of 15,7 per cent in the past year. Hope carrier remains the hearing book, it had 2005 a turnover increase of 14,1 per cent. Also the booksellers confirm that: About 40 per cent of the booksellers speak of a better conversion with hearing books.
