In principle two strategies of the ascertainment of need are differentiated: the need and the consumption controlled ascertainment of need. A condition for the ascertainment of need according to need is being present concrete customer orders or from production programs, on whose basis Bedarfe can be determined by parts lists accurately after quantity and date. The determination according to need (deterministic determination) is divided into analytic and synthetic method.

If these conditions are not given, is the consumption controlled ascertainment of need, i.e. the forecast of the future need (demand forecast or demand forecast) due to periodisierten consumption in the past the preferential strategy.
